Abstract

The study examined the various aspects of the socio-economic characteristics of drivers in the Darjiling, West Bengal. The aim of this study is to explore the role of the driver for promoting the tourism industry in this area. 110 structured questionnaires were administered to the drivers. A few quantitative techniques are used for data presentation. Findings indicated that Hindu general caste drivers are mostly having primary and secondary education background. The incomes of the majority belong to INR 5000 to INR 10000 which is considered as meager. This is due to high rent of the car, large family size, tax burden; pressure of the syndicate. It is also hoped that the discussion and analyses generated by the observation and findings will contribute to frame a policy for healthier tourism development.
