Abstract

Democracy is one of the most emerging and significant concepts of the twenty first century contemporaries world. Democracy is that, where it says different ways of good governance and it outcome is that in today the different countries have followed to move from non-democratic to democratic political governance systems. Therefore, modernity has to democratically govern much larger and complex societies as compared to the antiquities, where direct democracy was possible, which is why modern democracy has to be representative. Modern democracy while being the principle of sovereignty of the people is simultaneously the symbolic framework within which this principle functions. The novelty of modern democracy is that while retaining the earlier principle of sharing of power by the people is retained within a framework informed by the liberal discourse, or the principles of classical liberalism. In this paper I propose to exhibit, we should use them to formulate a better understanding of liberal democracy, one that acknowledges its paradoxical nature.
